This I know: we all have a food story. For many of us, what started as the most natural thing in the world evolved into destructive patterns that we feel unable to escape. Many can’t even remember a time when our eating wasn’t conflicted.
Over time, our perceptions of our bodies began to control us.
Somewhere along the line, we decided that the experts had to be right—we were out of control, uneducated, a problem to be solved. If we only followed the correct formula, or found the right combination, or eliminated this or that-we would solve the problem. We found ourselves grasping at whatever new diet or “program” came along, hoping that this would be the answer we were looking for. Only to feel let down and defeated, yet again, when it wasn’t.
Here’s the thing: we knew what we were doing all along. Each one of us, no matter how much baggage our relationship with food holds, has an innate wisdom that will bring us back to exactly where we need to be. It’s just a matter of uncovering it.
It is my firm belief that, even if we have strayed far from that innate wisdom surrounding food that we are all born with, we can come back to it. And with that wisdom comes a level of peace and enjoyment that most of us, long ago, decided wasn’t for us. When we eat intuitively, the number on the scale doesn’t matter anymore. Rather than focusing on food from the outside in, we focus from the inside out. The obsession, the self-loathing, the constant need to find the right “plan” or “solution” falls away.
